Perfect for paddlers with some kayaking experience but the daily schedule can be easily adjusted to fit first time kayakers as well. We’ll explore all 13 islands of Elaphiti Archipelago, experience sunset-to-night kayaking as a little something extra, visit salt flats in historical town of Ston, marking the north border of former Republic of Dubrovnik, and walk its 4,5km long walls!
During this tour we will average approximately 15 kilometers or more, or around three to four hours, of paddling per day. For all that effort we’ll be rewarded with beautiful high limestone cliffs towering over us, perfect for cliff jumping and a swim in Blue and Green hidden cave, their location known only to local fishermen and, of course, us kayakers.
Discover Dalmatia trip combines four nights of expedition-style sea kayaking: packing everything we’ll need to overnight as we go; and three nights of tourist-style sea kayaking: using accommodation on the island of Lopud as home-base.
One thing, though, remains constant throughout the tour: guests on Discover Dalmatia will get to see the entire Elaphiti Archipelago and wider region generally from a truly unique perspective.
WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THIS TOUR
“We were a group of friends and family (grown-ups only) who did a great week of paddling in October – the Discover Elaphiti tour. Excellent gear and good instructions made all in our group of paddlers with mixed experiences enhance our skills during this week. But above all a great week with a really good guide and great Croatian cuisine!”

Departure day: Breakfast – Ferry back to Dubrovnik – Transfer to the airport
After we pick you up at the Airport, we’ll take you to Dubrovnik Old Town to relax before boarding the local ferry headed to the island of Lopud at 4pm. On Lopud, we’ll escort you to your accommodation. We will then, as a group, talk about supplies and clothes needed for the next few days. Waterproof dry bags will be supplied. At dinner that night, the group will go over trip logistics, pore over nautical maps, discuss any necessary arrangements, talk about Croatia, and get to know one another.
After breakfast, we’ll begin our adventure and the first day of kayaking. There will be a thorough explanation of safety techniques, paddle strokes, and kayak management … all tools you’ll perfect as the week progresses. We will then get in our kayaks and paddle from Lopud toward the mainland and up the coast in a northwesterly direction. We’ll stop for lunch along the coast, relax, talk more about logistics, and answer any questions members of the group have. Back in our kayaks, we follow the shoreline to the village of Slano, where we’ll stay the night in private accommodations. After changing and washing up, we’ll reconvene for dinner.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 16 km)
Following a hearty breakfast, we continue north for Pelješac Peninsula and the Ston channel. Today’s lunch will be a real treat. We’ll stop at a traditional restaurant and dine on the local specialties: oysters, mussels, and an assortment of other shellfish. After relaxing a bit and toasting our meal, we continue on toward the village of Broce — about two kilometers from the city of Ston — where we will overnight in private apartments. The group will then be given two choices: they can either walk to the historic town of Ston (famous for its 4.5-kilometer-long wall and its salt flats) or do some night kayaking in the calm Ston Channel, which can be truly unforgettable … especially on a clear night with a full moon. The group will come back together for dinner before bunking up for the night.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 18 km + 4 km Night kayaking)
Our expedition continues after we re-pack our boats for another exciting paddle back through the channel and into the Adriatic to Šipan — the largest island in the Elaphiti Arcipelago. Following a big morning of paddling, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the uninhabited island of Olipa. Then, we pass the tiny islands of Tajan, Crkvina, Goleč, and Kosmeć as we kayak toward the beautiful and crowd-less, seaside town of Šipanska Luka. We will take another breather and use the break to swim and dive and enjoy the crystal-blue Adriatic waters before continuing onto Šipan, where we’ll drop our gear in our private apartments and then take advantage of free time before dinner.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 20 km)
Another amazing day is upon us. After breakfast, we pack our kayaks and then paddle … eventually in the direction of Lopud, which will complete the initial loop of our Elaphiti-Pelješac-Elaphiti adventure. Before we do that though, we first paddle to the southwest side of Šipan to visit a natural, 25-meter-high, rock archway framing the island from one direction and the open Adriatic Sea to the other. This is a great photo-op and we’ll take some time to get shots of the group before continuing on in a southwesterly direction to the Green Cave. Sporting masks and snorkels, we’ll swim underwater and into the cave’s entrance, which opens into a large space big enough to stand in. From inside we’ll have a perfect vantage point to see the glorious sunlight which reflects against the cave’s sandy bottom and illuminates the grotto in a surreal green glow. After a break for swimming and cliff jumping into safe, deep waters, we’ll continue to the village of Suđurađ where we will have lunch in a local restaurant. Relaxation complete, we kayak back to Lopud (and to our original rooms) to enjoy the sunset before dinner.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 15 km)
We gather early for a meal and then paddle from Lopud to the other side of the island and the magnificent Šunj Beach. Along the way, we’ll take some time to swim, dive, and cliff jump, before stopping on the Šunj for lunch at a local beach bar. Following lunch, we’ll relax or try traditional Croatian beach ball game: picigin. Sandy Sunj is a perfect place for some beach fun. We’ll leave our kayaks and make an evening walk around Lopud and visit couple of interesting sights like Fort Kaštio, highest peak of the island. We’ll have a majestic view of all the islands we’ve paddled around. We’ ll finish our hike in Lopud village where we’ll have our well deserved dinner.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 7 km)
After some fresh breakfast, we’ll walk back to Sunj to get ready for our last paddling day. We’ll paddle across the channel to the island of Koločep. Here we will take out at the marvelous, underwater Blue Cave and have unforgettable picnic lunch on top of an amazing limestone cliff: Placet. We’ll enjoy the moment and the natural wonders surrounding us with a session of swimming and diving before kayaking to the village of Donje Celo, where we’ll stop for coffee and ice cream. Back in the kayaks, the late afternoon sun sparkling on the sea, we’ll paddle back to Lopud and get ready for a memorable final dinner to toast and regale our accomplishments over the magical week.
• Main Activity: Sea Kayaking (total kayaking distance – 20 km)
After breakfast, the group will take the ferry from Lopud back to Dubrovnik, where guides will either transfer guests to the airport or to a pre-booked hotel if they are staying on in the area.

HOW TO PACK
- First and foremost, bring water bottles. If you don’t already have your own, you can buy cheap bottled water at any market or kiosk and you can reuse the bottle. Croatian water (from the sink) is very clean.
- Sun block, lotion, and protection is only slightly less important than water. The sun here can be very strong, especially in hot summer months. Sunscreen is for more than making sure you have a great tan. It could save your vacation.
- We also suggest a hat, sunglasses (with a leash), and a long-sleeve T-shirt if you are particularly sensitive to the sun.
- Bathing suits should be worn under your clothes.
- Usually the only thing you’ll need for a kayaking day out is a small towel.
- We provide dry bags for your belongings but boat space is limited. In these bags you can place wallets, clothes, and cameras without fear of water.
- Active sandals (Teva, Merrell, etc.) are great for kayaking, and light hiking. If you don’t have active sandals we will provide you with basic aqua shoes.
- Cash is still the best kind of money in Croatia. Markets will take credit cards but many small restaurants will not. During day trips lunches are included in the tour price, but for any refreshment, gelatto or other snacks you will need a small amount of cash money every day.
- Athough we are in the European Union, Croatian currency is still Kuna (1EUR= 7,67HRK). If you didn’t have time to exchange money before you arrived in Croatia, you can do so at the airport. Exchange rates are more or less the same everywhere. There is also an ATM machine on Lopud island, but no bank or exchange office.
- Mosquitoes are a common summer pest in Croatia, so bring an efficient bug spray with you, it will make the evenings and nights here more pleasant. You can also buy it in local shops in Dubrovnik, but make sure to have it with you before you reach Lopud island, as there is only one shop there and the prices can be very steep during the high season.
